LIONS MEETINGS
The Navan Lions have been a busy group this year so far. We were fortunate to have PDG Claude Bertrand visit us on April 24th to explain about the Childhood Cancer Initiative that he is heading up. At that time, $13,000 had been raised and pending a grant from LCF to buy equipment to help sick children with cancer. This certainly is a worthwhile cause and we appreciated his presentation to explain what is being done in this area. The Lions District A4 convention took place in Kingston on April 21-23 and the Navan Lions were represented by 6 of our members. Many details were discussed regarding upcoming events and the new building for the Lions Foundation Dog Guide Program in Oakville, Ontario. Lions were kept busy with an assembly line of volunteers stuffing over 150 bags with children’s items to go to the children at the Sick Kids Hospital in Kingston and to CHEO in Ottawa.
COMMUNITY BUILDING AND FUNDRAISING
Update on the Bradley Cup – Hal MacPherson, Treasurer of The Navan Lions Club presented Will Boyer and Liz Morris of Team Mugglemorr with a cheque from the fundraising at the Bradley Cup in the amount of $10,000 to be used for Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. Great work to all involved with the Bradley Cup!
The Navan Lions had two trivia teams competing at the Trivia Night hosted by the Gloucester Lions Club on May 19th at the Fred Barrett Arena. While we are a smart group of Lions we were not smart enough to bring home any prizes! Thank you to the Gloucester Lions for hosting this fun event! The Chili dinner was also delicious.
Navan Lions Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides took place on Saturday, May 27th from 12 PM to 3 PM at the Navan Domes. We had 18 people and 14 dogs walking the 3 km route in the Navan Community on this beautiful sunny day! A BBQ lunch followed provided by the Cumberland Lions Club. Draw prizes were awarded for walkers and their dogs and two winners in the colouring contest for children up to age 12. Joann Mainwood won the lovely Colonial Vet raffle basket and Dana Simpson won the beautiful Pet Valu raffle basket. We are pleased to have raised an additional $2,600 for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, bring our total over $8000!
Navan Lions Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, June 16th at the Pine View Golf Club at 1471 Blair Road. Registration starts at 8:00 am with a shotgun style start at 9:00 am. The entry fee ($95 single or $380 foursome) includes your green fee (nine holes), use of a golf cart, morning snack and coffee upon arrival, BBQ lunch after the round, contest opportunities and silent auction. Registration is near full at this time.
