LIONS MEETINGS
On March 27 we were fortunate to have PDG Lion Andy Etherington come to speak to us regarding the new facility being built in Oakville for the Lions Dog Guides. This impressive 89,000 square foot building will be fully accessible and have dedicated training rooms and classrooms. It also has 36 accessible and comfortable bedrooms for people in training with their Dog Guide. The sale of the current training school and administration office provides $25M to the building cost of $50M. The plan is to have the building completed in 2024. This fundraising campaign for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is called “The Difference” and makes it truly profound. By providing mobility and independence, safety and security, opportunity and development, the Foundation can help to match 250 Dog Guides with people each year. For more information on this facility or to donate, please go to Thedifference@dogguides.com
BRADLEY CUP UPDATE
We are still finalizing all the details of the great fundraising efforts of the Bradley Cup organizers so will report on the final donation amounts in next month’s column.
VISION SCREENING
By the end of May we will have visited 12 schools and over 2,000 students will have had their vision checked and many will soon be getting free eyeglasses courtesy of Essilor. The Navan Lions and other area Lions Clubs have been part of this program for several years now but only truly back at it in the New Year since Covid put a stop to the vision screening. Since January we have visited schools within the OCDSB and assessed over 2,000 students for vision issues. Some have been referred on to see an Ophthalmologist who can then prescribe glasses if necessary. Many of these children are refugees or come from families with limited income and may never have had their vision checked. If glasses are required, Onesight Essilor Luxottica Foundation is providing the students with free glasses so they can see what they have been missing. It is truly a very rewarding program.
